Auto insurance is a topic that all vehicle owners, and drivers, should have some knowledge about. In the United States of America, 47 of the 50 states have made it mandatory that vehicle owners have some type of online auto insurance policy. Therefore, if you’re a citizen of the USA, find out the exact legal requirements about auto insurance in your state. An auto insurance policy comes in a variety of forms, but all have one purpose, that is to compensate losses, damages or injury suffered by the policy holder and/or their vehicle, as well as another person or property involved in an accident.

Before buying an auto insurance policy, there are various factors that need to be considered to ensure that the policy you buy will provide adequate cover for you and your vehicle. Each person’s auto insurance policy is governed by certain factors. These include your age, your driving record and the type of cover you want. Choosing from a variety of types of insurance, your final policy will be made up of a variety of types of insurance.

For example, Liability Insurance will cover property damage and injury to someone else in the event of the accident. Compensation for Liability insurance also includes the other party’s medical bills and, if required, their legal bills as well. Comprehensive Insurance covers damage or loss of the insured vehicle, even if the damage is not caused in an accident. Comprehensive Insurance also includes cover for damage or loss caused by an act of God (fire, floods, wind etc) and theft. Some states in the USA insist that vehicle owners include Personal Injury Protection in their auto insurance policies. Other types of auto insurance include Medical, Collision, Uninsured Motorist and Rental Reimbursement. An insurance agent can explain each type to you in more detail. Most insurance policies include Comprehensive Insurance due to its all-encompassing benefits.

Once you have established the minimum auto insurance requirements in your state, you can select some, or all, of the various types of cover that you think are necessary. The premium for each will be added together, and combined to form one monthly payment under one ‘umbrella’ policy. Be cautious however about choosing minimal insurance just because your state is less fussy than others. Cutting corners could very well land you with major bills in the event of an accident. It’s not the insurance agent’s responsibility to make sure you’re adequately insured. The onus is on your shoulders. Ask hypothetical questions about potential circumstances before signing on the dotted line.
